Pedro Almodóvar is sinds jaar en dag el rey van het melodrama en dat is in zijn moderne interpretatie van Jean Cocteau’s La Voix Humaine niet anders. Tilda Swinton werpt zich in Almodóvars eerste Engelstalige film telefonisch in de armen van haar ex-geliefde, op wie ze al dagen wacht.

The United States of America is a road movie in the purest sense. To the rhythm of Benning and Gordon’s silent journey through New York, Chicago, the Rocky Mountains, Las Vegas, and other locations, they show a North America that looks much more sober than the bombastic image we are used to seeing of the country. Their USA feels calmer, almost anti-American. 

In Luces del desierto, strange lights appear over the Mexican desert. The residents tell what they have seen: a fireball, flying lights, flashes, lightning perhaps? The uniqueness of each experience builds to a larger story, formed by a chorus of people. The film invites the viewer to open their eyes wide and listen to  the sounds hidden in the darkness.

Isaac Julien is a pioneer in video and installation art. His work constantly pushes the boundaries of the medium, combining film with photography, performance, music, and painting. Social inequality is often central to this, and more specifically, his black and queer identity is a thread running through his oeuvre. In his very first film, Who Killed Colin Roach?, he reflects on the death of the 23-year-old title character who was shot at the entrance to a London police building in 1982.
