Darkroom

The Turkish city of Mardin lies near the borders of Syria and Iraq. It is home to many different populations and individuals who have fled the conflicts nearby. In one of the city’s neighbourhoods, a group of children meets at the Sirkhane Darkroom Workshop for analogue photography.

Asli Baykal delicately records their apparently carefree days while learning about the mysteries of photography. Using 16mm film, she captures the sun’s rays, illuminating their outdoor games, their taste for freshly picked pomegranates, and the developer’s sound in the darkroom where magic happens...

Under the title Echoes of Ji.hlava, the International Documentary Film Festival presents several award-winning films from their latest festival edition. This spirited yet poetic short film programme was put together by young guest curators from the film course at KASK School of Arts.

Echoes of Ji.hlava is organised in collaboration with the Czech Centre in Brussels, with the support of the city of Jihlava, Vysočina Region and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Brussels. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Lucie Rosenfeldová.
