Safe Space

Now that the rights of queer people of colour are increasingly under threat, the legacy of their ballroom culture is more important than ever. This community also embraced transgender people in response to a society that marginalised their existence. The scene offers a safe space to express different ways of gender expression.

Safe Space is composed of countless YouTube clips of ballroom events from the early 1990s, when the AIDS epidemic was at its peak in New York City. Meanwhile, AI-generated voices recite experiences and statements from LGBTQ+ refugees today. The clash between image and sound reflects both the harsh reality of a minority within a minority and the sense of community that emerges from these experiences.

Safe Space precedes Leilah Weinraub’s documentary film Shakedown, a unique look at a lesbian strip club in LA founded by and for African-American women.
