Andante Ma Non Troppo
Barbara Meter, born in 1939, is one of The Netherlands’ leading experimental filmmakers. In the 1970s, she co-founded Electric Cinema, a small cinema hall in Amsterdam that, for a long time was the epicentre of Dutch independent avant-garde cinema. Meter has produced a broad body of work, from feminist documentaries to experimental fiction films.
Recently, the Eye Filmmuseum restored much of her work, including Andante Ma Non Troppo. In it, Meter explores what it means to look with the camera. She observes Turkish women on a street corner right in front of her own house, where they meet every day. The recordings are repetitive, but in Meter’s final cut, she abandons this chronology and composes the images as if they were a song.
This evening is a collaboration between ArtCinema OFFoff and the new female collective Ursula. In dialogue with Meter’s work, Ursula put together their own programme of contemporary films by Belgian female filmmakers.
Followed by a conversation with Barbara Meter.
